$0.00

Yale Club of Silicon Valley and Yale Club of San Francisco Joint Event

As thousands protest the significant rise of Asian hate crimes in the wake of the pandemic, what can actually be done to curb the violence and protect the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community?  Please join our very special guest Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen, who will answer your questions regarding what his office is doing to prosecute hate crimes and to protect the AAPI community in the Bay Area.

As District Attorney for the Bay Area’s largest county (1.9 million residents) since 2011, Jeff Rosen is a nationally-recognized leader in criminal justice reform including jail population reduction, diversion programs for non-violent offenders and prison reform.  Noteworthy cases prosecuted under Mr. Rosen’s administration include former County Supervisor George Shirakawa for stealing public funds; the three correctional officers who beat mentally ill inmate Michael Tyree to death; and Stanford swimmer Brock Turner who sexually assaulted an unconscious young woman. Inspired by the Brock Turner conviction, DA Rosen released Channel Miller’s powerful victim impact statement which helped change the law in California to ensure prison sentences for those convicted of sexually assaulting unconscious and intoxicated victims.

More recently, DA Rosen and his staff are prosecuting a series of racially motivated hate crimes in the Bay Area including a woman who spat on an Asian man having lunch in downtown Mountain View, telling him to go back to “where you came from.” The DA is also prosecuting a San Francisco man who yelled ethnic expletives while sexually assaulting an Asian woman waiting for a morning commuter train in San Jose.  DA Rosen is also prosecuting a San Jose woman who attacked a Mountain View McDonald’s employee and his manager, referring to them as “stupid Mexicans” after the two employees had asked the woman to leave because she refused to wear a protective face mask.
